This short story is about a very Top Secret sniper mission pulled off in 1966 Vietnam by Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock. You probably have read about that mission. The top brass said Hathcock was the only one who might pull it off though there was a good chance that he might not return from it. Supposedly taking out this one important man might change the course of the war. Before he accepted this mission Hathcock was not told in which country it was, or who the target would be. Only after he accepted did he learn some details. It required him to crawl through a large open meadow guarded by enemy patrols for three days, two nights and part of the next morning before he would be in range to take out the important target.
You may had been told about this mission with Hathcock before but this time in this short story you the reader get to actually experience the agony and the deprivations that Carlos experienced. And you will learn things you may not have read elsewhere about this incredibly difficult and extremely long mission. For instance, without a light to read his compass at night how did Carlos know where he had to go? How much food did he consume? In those almost 4 days of crawling how did he manage his bathroom? How did he sleep for two nights with enemy patrols around him? How did he handle his encounter with a poisonous viper?
How could he stand the army of ants that took up lodging in his clothes? But most important of all is how Hathcock fought to control the pain and stress and open blisters he suffered on his shoulder, hip and arm from such a prolonged abrasive slow motion crawl? And how could he have made that one shot, one kill that had to be dead-center in the small target that was not just the length of one football field away but it was the length of seven football fields away! How could he possibly make a shot like that? And finally after being cramped up, eaten up, and bruised up…how did he then so quickly avoid capture?
