A collection of poems centered on deconstruction and the outgrowing of a childhood belief system that was forged in fundamental religion.
---
I grew up Mormon and now I don't know what or who I am. This collection contains the things I wrote as I became okay with that.
I guess I'd call it a faith transition. When my belief system died and I grieved it. Grieved it hard. It would have been easier if I hadn't given myself so completely to it. If I hadn't twisted myself into pretzels and snapped my back in half three times over trying to fit into boxes I fully believed weren't optional.
I didn't mean to listen to myself, I meant to listen to god, but as I listened longer and deeper, I found that the two became the same. I guess I abandoned my religion, my parents and my grandparents religion, in order to honor myself and, strangely, god—or whatever it is out there that I'm feeling like believing in the moment. See, I found this gorgeous place called "I don't know" and I live there now. There's a few centering truths I hold close, with an inner acknowledgement that I might grow beyond them at some point too. And I'm okay with that. It feels better than I could have imagined to have reconciled with uncertainty.
What I have not reconciled with are abuses of power disguised as "god's law." Grieving has not exhausted my anger, only taught me to love it, because that anger is the truest voice that calls out harm.
My conception of truth has evolved so widely and beautifully that my dedication to religion didn't hinge on truth claims. My question wasn't "is the church true?' but rather "is the church good?" And sometimes, often, it's not. Underneath the casseroles and cookies, no amount of niceness will fix abuse.
But that's not what I'm writing about here. There are better explanations detailing the sins of many who call themselves saints but what remains at the end of the problems are people like me.
A hurt person. I can't overexplain the pain of realizing your family and community's best intentions destroyed you. But I wrote a bunch of poems that sure tried.
These poems are the bravest and best of me, and they are also messy, unrefined, and raw. I wanted to write and I needed to write, but it’s a terrifying thing. As I wrote, I chose a word to guide my process—that word is “gentle.” I knew if I was going to do something so significant, I needed to do it with incredible gentleness.
So I invite you to take this word along with you on your journey through this book. Read it gently, friends. Absorb, enjoy, rage, mourn—do whatever it is you need to do with the feelings you find on your journey through—and do it gently. We deserve tenderness.
