Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with the Flash Interface

Before diving into the world of Flash, take the time to explore its interface. Familiarize yourself with the various panels, tools, and options available to you. Understanding the workspace is essential for navigating through the software smoothly.

Step 2: Learn the Basics of Drawing in Flash

The pencil tool is where the magic begins. Mastering the art of drawing in Flash involves understanding brush types, stroke properties, and managing layers. Practice creating simple shapes, lines, and curves to get a feel for the tool's capabilities.

Step 3: Understanding Keyframes and Animation

Flash's keyframe-based animation system is what sets it apart from traditional drawing tools. Learn how to create keyframes, manipulate timelines, and bring your drawings to life through motion. Explore different animation techniques, such as frame-by-frame animation and tweening, to create smooth and dynamic movements.

Step 4: Adding Interactivity with ActionScript

One of Flash's most powerful features is its ability to add interactivity to your projects. Dive into ActionScript, the programming language used with Flash, to create interactive elements, buttons, and navigation systems. Explore basic coding concepts and gradually advance your skills to create more complex interactions.

Practical Exercises to Sharpen Your Skills

To truly master Flash, practice is crucial. Here are a few practical exercises to help you sharpen your skills and unleash your creativity:

Exercise 1: Create a Simple Animated Character

Choose a character concept and bring it to life using Flash. Use keyframes and different animation techniques to make your character move and express emotions.

Exercise 2: Design an Interactive Game Scene

Create a game scene with interactive elements. Add buttons, mouse hover effects, and animated transitions to make the scene immersive and engaging for the user.

Exercise 3: Build a Multimedia Presentation

Combine your drawing skills, animation expertise, and interactive knowledge to create a multimedia presentation. Incorporate audio, video, and interactive navigation to captivate your audience and deliver an impactful message.

How to Learn Flash is a series of Flash tutorials for beginners that walks you through the basic production pipeline of creating Flash projects without making you pull your hair out. In this exercise, Simple Interactive Pencil, you will create a basic project: a pencil that when clicked, draws a straight line.

This first project, though very simple in appearance, shows the basic elements that are needed to build interactive projects in Flash: drawing, creating and naming layers, creating symbols, button states, importing images & sound, motion & shape tweens, animation, and Actionscript (Flash's computer language).

I have had over 10 years of experience in teaching and using Flash, and I wanted to create a series of tutorials for all of those who were curious about learning Flash, but weren't quite sure what was involved. This series of lessons has been adapted from classes I have taught to beginners who were just learning Flash.

We at tonyteach believe that learning Flash, or anything for that matter, shouldn't be difficult or expensive, and our goal is to pack as many tips, tricks, and techniques into a single, simple, cost-effective project.

With that in mind, the How to Learn Flash series is designed for a skill level of novice to beginner. This first project, Simple Interactive Pencil, should take between 30 minutes to an hour.
